Master’s of Science in Paleoecology and Wildfire Reconstruction, Department of Geography, University of Victoria (Deadline: March 12, 2021)

We are seeking applications for a Master’s student to work on conducting paleoenvironmental analysis to examine the historical vegetation and wildfire patterns in forested watersheds on southeastern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. The ideal candidate will have geological or ecological field and laboratory experience. Past experience working with sediment cores to reconstruct past environments and experience with computation and statistical methods for environmental analysis is desirable, though not necessary. Applicants must have a relevant Bachelor’s degree completed no later than April 2021. The successful applicant will be working on an interdisciplinary team of research scientists and students in developing new approaches for understanding the relationship between wildfire and climate change. The position will be jointly supervised by Dr. Chris Bone (UVic Geography) and Dr. Kendrick Brown (Natural Resources Canada) in collaboration with stakeholders and practitioners from government and industry. Funding for this position is $17,500 per year commencing September 2021 and ending August 2023, with potential for additional income in the form of department employment and awards opportunities.
